Patient-tailored reproductive medicine for PCO(S) and oncofertility patients: In vitro maturation of oocytes and ovarian tissue cryopreservation: what, why, when and how
The aim of this workshop is to provide state-of-the-art knowledge and tools to assist embryologists and fertility specialists to incorporate the IVM technology and ovarian tissue cryopreservation in the lab and in the clinic in order to establish an elaborate fertility preservation program.
Oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) is defined as the maturation in vitro of immature cumulus–oocyte complexes collected from antral follicles.
Fueled by recent scientific reports of clinical data, there is emerging interest in IVM as an alternative ART in high responders. The International PCOS Network has recommended that IVM can be offered to achieve pregnancy and livebirth rates approaching those of standard hormone-driven ART without the risk of OHSS for women with PCOS, in units with sufficient expertise.
IVM is also applied in the field of fertility preservation for cancer patients. Immature oocytes can be harvested transvaginally and/or retrieved from extracorporeal ovarian tissue. Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue by slow freezing is considered a valid clinical procedure for fertility preservation, next to oocyte and embryo vitrification. The use of IVM as an appended technique in fertility preservation may increase the probability of delayed childbearing in the increasing population of young cancer survivors.
This workshop is limited to 8 participants (4 clinicians + 4 embryologists/lab technicians) to guarantee sufficient practice time and one-on-one teaching for each participant.
